While you may be able to fix small cracks in your foundation or chimney on your own, it's almost impossible to do the work right when bricks are crumbling out of place. Whether you have water coming in to your home because of decaying masonry, or you want to weatherproof your home, working with a mason is your best option. When you want to maintain the integrity of the structure of your home and there are problems with cracked or broken masonry, it's time to call for help. A mason has a number of options to repair your foundation or chimney, and it's work that shouldn't be left up to an amateur.
Weatherproofing Your Chimney or Foundation
A big problem with chimneys or foundations made out of bricks is when the structure leaks from exposure to harsh weather conditions. While the leaking may be subtle, it can still be destructive. If you need to weatherproof your masonry, EIFS coatings can be used to provide a protective layer on your cement or brick structures. The coatings prevent water damage on just about any surface, and are effective at making a chimney or basement weatherproof. If your basement keeps leaking and you can't seem to find the source, a contractor can identify the problem for you.
Structural Damage Leads to More Damage
Ignoring a few cracks in your chimney or foundation may not seem like a big deal. The problem is, when you ignore small problems, they will lead to bigger problems. When you ignore a chimney that begins to crumble or you don't bother with repairing a few cracks in your foundation, you can quickly have a mess on your hands. Foundation cracks allow water to get into your basement, which can quickly become a breeding ground for dangerous molds. A crumbling chimney can lead to a complete collapse of the structure, causing problems with the side of the home it is attached to.
Call a Professional
Masonry is a learned skill. If you are not trained in brick laying or foundation repair, you will need to call a professional to assess your situation. You will end up spending less money on a professional than you will on fixing your own mistakes. When you see a problem in your basement, if you find standing water, it's time to call a contractor that can help. While you can try to fix the problem temporarily, a professional like Corrado Construction will get the job done right.Share

For years, my wife and I debated on what we wanted to do with all of the spare land in the back of our house. We were lucky enough to buy a house on an extra-large lot for a great deal, but the land was "going to waste" for quite a while. One day, we finally decided to have a guest house built on it, and now that the house is finished, we wish we had built it long ago. We are now renting it out for some extra income, and it is helping us save for retirement. I have always been fascinated by construction, so I enjoyed watching the professionals build the guest house and learned a lot during the process. I decided to fill some free time by blogging about the experience and sharing some construction info I learned during the process. Come back soon!
